A flair for the dramatic was not lost during the final weekend of this year’s Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada. Even though Roman De Angelis and Marco Cirone were mathematically destined to finish atop their respective divisions (Platinum and Masters), the duo kept things interesting with each driver earning their points and the series championship in Tremblant.
Race #1
Weather played a forceful factor in Saturday’s Race #1, as the skies grew dark and the track grew damp. Puddles were prominent around every corner and Marco fell victim to the increasingly wet raceway. The veteran driver completed the contest but dropped to the back of the pack after a long pit stay. Despite the disparaging outcome, the finish saw Cirone clinch the Platinum Masters standings with one race left in the season.
Starting in pole position after Parker Thompson was penalized, Roman reigned supreme once again and cruised to his tenth straight victory in 2019. De Angelis took a decided advantage over the field and, as he is on the road, was officially uncatchable in the overall standings.
Race #2
Sunday was a different story though.
Gridding up behind Thompson, Roman started the second race in an unfamiliar position. The two front-runners jousted back and forth, but Thompson kept De Angelis at bay through most of the 45-minute sprint. Getting time updates after every lap, Roman made his move with mere minutes left and overtook Thompson. Once out in front, he never looked back. Roman extended the gap and made it 11 straight victories.
On the other hand, Marco had a rollercoaster Race #2. After starting seventh, he fell back to twelfth when he quickly veered off track and damaged his front bumper. A quick fix and tireless team effort by the crew, saw him rejoin the group on a yellow and not miss any laps. From that point on, he was a man possessed. Cirone tore through the ranks, finishing in his original seventh spot and atop the Platinum Masters.
Local flavour
Driving the #84 Mark Motors, Ottawa’s own Perry Bortolotti battled hard the entire weekend, securing a spot on both Platinum Masters podiums. The seasoned wheelman had a large contingent of family make the trip to Tremblant and they were noteably excited to celebrate Perry’s strong season finale.
The Mark Motors family also had a large group at the final race weekend, as the staff and supporters were gathered to cheer on their team.
