After five appearances on the podium in the season’s first races, Mark Motors Racing built on that success last weekend with two first and one third place finish in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge presented by Yokohama.
Not only did Roman De Angelis sweep the event at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, he claimed pole position in the qualifiers and only gave the up the lead for a few laps on Sunday morning. The 18-year-old recorded the two fastest laps in each race, clocking in at a quick 01:38.254 on his way to winning the event. The back-to-back victories pushed De Angelis up the points standings to 133, 18 more than Parker Thompson in second spot.
“I’m really happy with how everything went this weekend. We had mega pace from the beginning and were able to bring that through the whole weekend with a clean sweep,” exclaimed Roman.
“It was also cool to see the chemistry between both Kelly Moss and Mark Motors working together with both championships being involved. It’s never bad racing at The Grand Prix Circuit in general, especially when you can sweep the weekend! We just need to keep the ball rolling into the back half of the season!”
The weekend also started well for Marco Cirone and the 88 car. Finishing third in Saturday’s race, Cirone’s podium spot locked up his second Platinum Masters victory in GT3 Cup Challenge Canada and caused a shift in the point standings for that championship. Unfortunately for Marco, he suffered a setback on Sunday after some contact knocked him out of the race.
“As usual The Montreal Cup Race was filled with highs and lows. After having a successful third place finish in race one, we were on track to finish the same for race two. Unfortunately, we were hit from behind by an American competitor that forced us out of the race. It’s so disappointing to have worked so hard and have a great pace only to be forced to retire by the actions of someone else. A huge thanks to the team and the Mrak’s for all their support. Congratulations to my teammate Roman who was so fast and won both races. If it was not for him, I don’t think I would have been as fast. He gave me some great advice and it was greatly appreciated! On to CTMP!”
“The entire Mark Motors family is immensely proud of the team,” praised Executive Vice President of Mark Motors Liza Mrak. “The hard work and dedication from everyone has led to these impressive on-track results. The synergy between Marco and Roman is also quite evident, as the duo work so well together. Though an unfavourable situation occurred in the second race, we couldn’t be happier with our weekend in Montreal.”
Races 5 and 6 will take place at the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park on Saturday, July 6th and Sunday, July 7th.
